Reece James reveals his former roles before becoming a right-back.

Chelsea defender, Recce James is one of the best right-backs in the world at the moment. He has carved a niche for himself in that position and his pace, delivery, and marking skills are his greatest features.

It's quite surprising to know that James didn't start his football career as a defender, neither did he play at right-back until he was 15. The 22-year-old started out as a striker and was later converted to a midfielder. He did this for a while and then he was moved to the right-back position. According to him, he hated it for the first two years.

He says, “I had been a striker until I was maybe 12 or 13 at Chelsea and I looked up to Drogba. I don't actually know why, but when I was about 12, I was moved back into midfield. Then, when I was 15, I was moved to right-back and the first two years I hated it.”

Kudos should be given to those who discovered the right-back in James because he has made a name for himself in that position. He is not only playing as a right back, but in a more advanced right wing-back role and he has gotten plaudits from great coaches like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.
