The Glazer family, who want to start a new era under the former Ajax coach, are investing around 120 million in transfer money in Ten Hag. United are expected to lose a large number of players on free transfers at the end of the month and are currently struggling to attract high-profile players. Ten Hag is said to be interested in Inter Milan defender Dumfries. Ten Hag is looking to bolster his options at right-back after being unconvinced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, according to Gazetta dello Sport, United will face stiff competition from Chelsea, who could make a €21m bid for the Netherlands international. Chelsea have a stronger offer than United as they can offer Champions League football next season after finishing third in the Premier League last season and they also have another trump card.

The Blues are currently in separate talks with Inter, who want to return Romelu Lukaku on loan after his club-record £97.5million move to west London failed.

The two clubs are yet to agree on the terms of the deal A loan fee is a sticking point but it seems Chelsea could beat United. If that's the case, Dumfries won't be the first player to turn United down in favor of a rival.

Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica on Tuesday after the Reds agreed to pay the Portuguese club a fee that will rise to 85million. The 22-year-old forward was in high demand but chose Liverpool over a move to Old Trafford, despite Ten Hag personally requesting Nunez to sign. M. Denzel Dumfries could move to Chelsea rather than Manchester United.

United's current transfer priority is Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong but they also struggle with him. Barcelona will sell De Jong but will charge a fee of 86 million (100 million) for his signature, which is significantly higher than United's valuation of 52 million (60 million) with surcharges for the 25-year-old midfielder.

De Jong has also stated that he is happy to stay at Barcelona, meaning United could miss the top target from Ten Hags, who he has worked so well with at Ajax. United have other targets including Ajax winger Antony and RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku but it seems Ten Hag's signing will be difficult.
