'Too slow', '4/10': Media rips into international display from reported £55m Chelsea target
Reported Chelsea target Jules Kounde was in action yesterday for France, which saw him earn a critical 4/10 match rating in the media.
France’s poor form in the Nations League continued on Monday night by losing 1-0 to Croatia.
Sevilla defender Kounde, 23, started again for the reigning world champions. Despite being an impressive centre-back by trade, he played 45 minutes in a right-back position before being substituted off at half time.
It’s since been confirmed he’ll require a small surgery on a long-term injury, which will reportedly see him sidelined for four weeks.
Media publication Get French Football News were fairly critical of the first-half performance from Kounde for his country against Croatia.
GFFN wrote: “Jules Koundé, 4 – Poor from the Sevilla man, who was often out of position, or too slow to return from his high position when his side lost possession. Saved by [Ibrahima] Konate when he failed to deal with Modrić’s sumptuous first-half through ball.”
He’s definitely not a player that lacks pace, however, it sounds like there are still weaknesses when he plays out of his preferred centre-half position.
Kounde’s a player with plenty of transfer speculation surrounding him over a potential move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
It’s been reported Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign the Sevilla centre-back in a £55million transfer.
He’s been one of La Liga’s standout defenders in recent times for Sevilla, so it looks like he may now get the chance to impress in the Premier League.
A bad half of football in a France shirt definitely shouldn’t be enough to deter Chelsea, especially when an injury was involved and he wasn’t in his most suited role.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues need the signing of an athletic and talented centre-back, which is why Kounde ticks a lot of boxes.
